How Hard Is it to Change a Glass Cooktop on a Maytag Stove?

The Maytag division of Whirlpool Corporation manufactures a line of residential stoves that have the electric burners tucked neatly underneath a smooth glass cooktop. Although glass cooktops are sleek and attractive, an abrupt temperature change or dropped object is all it takes to crack it. Once the cooktop is cracked, it must be replaced to prevent food spills from leaking into the burners. Replacing the glass cooktop on a Maytag range isn't difficult and requires no special tools. A Phillips screwdriver is all you need to complete the task.
  1. Safety First

    • Maytag stoves are residential appliances powered by 240 volts of electricity. Precautions must be taken to avoid electrical injury while replacing a glass stove cooktop. Unplug the stove from the wall outlet or flip the corresponding circuit breaker switch to "Off." Also, wear a pair of heavy work gloves when handling a broken glass cooktop.

    Removal

    • The glass cooktop is held to the top of the stove with several Phillips screws; the number of screws varies by the range model. Open the oven door and examine the front and side edges of the cooktop to locate the mounting screws. Remove them and set them aside. Lift the front of the cooktop slightly and pull it toward you to access and disconnect the cooktop wiring under the back edge of the glass. Carefully lift the old glass cooktop off of the stove.

    Replacement

    • Although installing the new glass cooktop is simple, you may want to enlist a helper to ensure that the replacement process goes smoothly. Set the new cooktop on the top of the range and pull it toward you 2 to 3 inches so that you can access the wiring harness. Ask your helper to hold the cooktop steady while you plug the connectors into the wiring harness. Push the glass cooktop into place. Replace the mounting screws.

    Warranty Information

    • Maytag stoves come with a limited warranty that covers the cost of select repairs for a certain period of time. Unauthorized self-repairs, such as replacing the glass cooktop, may void the warranty on your stove. Because these warranties can differ, it's wise to consult the terms of your warranty agreement before beginning your repairs. In some cases, you may be able to obtain written permission from Maytag to replace the cooktop yourself.
