How Replace a Flow Switch in a Hot Tub

A hot tub flow switch protects the hot tub's internal heater from burning out if the water level is too low. The heater is designed to operate when water is flowing through the hot tub plumbing. When the pump is activated, the switch turns on the heater after it detects adequate water flow through the pipes. Replacing the flow switch should take less than two hours using basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Metal paper clip
  • 3 sets of locking pliers
  • Nut driver set

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the power to the hot tub at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the access panel on the base of the hot tub, using a screwdriver to take out the screws. On some tubs, the panel may be secured by a simple lever mechanism that turns counterclockwise to open, so a screwdriver may not be required. The flow switch is located near the top of the internal mechanism. It is connected to three water hoses by clamps and two electrical wires that slide onto a pair of flat blades.

    • 3

Unplug the wiring harness from the control board. The wires fit inside a flat, rectangular plug with a series of holes on the side, one hole for each wire. Follow the two wires from the flow switch to the plug to determine where they connect to the plug.

    • 4

Press the tip of a bent paperclip into the two holes above the wires for the flow switch, one at a time, to release the wires.

    • 5

Clamp locking pliers to each of the three hoses where each hose connects to the flow switch. This stops water from leaking into the hot tub's operating mechanisms.

    • 6

Loosen the bolts in the three clamps holding the flow switch to the hoses, using a nut driver. Pull the hoses off the switch, which you can now remove from the hot tub.

    • 7

Attach the three hoses to the new flow switch in the same manner they were attached to the old part and tighten the clamp on each hose with the nut driver. Remove the three locking pliers.

    • 8

Insert the two wires on the new flow switch into the terminal holes on the wiring harness plug. Push in to lock each wire.

    • 9

Connect the plug to the power socket on the control board inside the hot tub.

    • 10

Replace the access panel on the base of the hot tub.

    • 11

Switch on the circuit breaker for the hot tub.
