Write down the model number of your garage door opener, which is printed on the side of the motor housing installed on the garage ceiling. Use this number to buy the correct replacement sensor so it will be compatible with your existing remote control.
Turn off the electricity at the circuit breaker or fuse box for the circuit that controls the garage door opener.
Pull gently on the left or right side of the sensor cover to disengage the cover tabs from the sensor bracket underneath. Pull off the cover to expose the sending and receiving sensors mounted on the bracket.
Loosen the two screws on each sensor to detatch the wire wrapped around each screw post. Each sensor is connected to a pair of wires. Label each wire with a piece of masking tape to note their positions on the sensors.
Cut and strip 1/4-inch of insulation from the end of each wire, using wire strippers, if the existing bare wire is frayed or visibly weak and at risk of breaking.
Loosen the screws holding each sensor to the mounting bracket to remove the sensors. The receiving sensor is on the left and has an LED light on the front. The sending sensor on the right does not have an LED.
Attach the new sensors in their respective positions on the bracket and tighten the mounting screws into each sensor.
Wrap the two wires around the screw terminals for their respective sensors using the tape labels as a guide. Tighten each screw to secure the wire.
Replace the sensor cover and snap it in place.
Turn on the circuit breaker or replace the fuse for the garage door circuit.
