Shut off electrical power to the pump motor at the circuit breaker or the fuse box. Turning off the pump does not stop electricity from flowing to the pump motor.
Open the service panel on the equipment, using a screwdriver to take out the screws. Locate the pump inside the cabinet. While the location varies with the type of equipment, pressure pumps are invariably connected to hoses with clamps. The adjustment knob is on the top or side of the pump. Look for a control marked with a series of gradations.
Turn the control knob clockwise to increase pressure generated by the pump or counterclockwise to lower the pressure setting. The gradations on the knob are marked in pounds per square inch. Do not exceed the recommended pressure setting for your particular equipment. If you do not have the owner's manual, contact the manufacturer.
Use pliers to turn the nut on the larger of the two pump springs clockwise to turn on the pump sooner when the system detects a drop in pressure. Twisting the nut counterclockwise lengthens the time before the pump will activate in response to falling pressure.
Twist the nut on the smaller pump spring clockwise to cut off the pump faster when the desired pressure level is achieved. Turning the nut counterclockwise causes the pump to continue working longer.
