Gas to Propane Clothing Dryer Conversion

Many home appliances use natural gas as their power source because it is a widely available type of fuel. However, occasionally homeowners move to areas of the country where natural gas is not available. In remote areas, propane fuel may be the only viable alternative for power. Washers, clothes dryers and other appliances can be adapted for propane gas, using conversion kits.
  1. Using Propane For Appiances

    • Liquid propane, or LP, is a liquefied petroleum gas that occurs in both oil and gas wells. It is not found naturally, but must be refined out of other petroleum materials. It is then stored as a liquid under pressure, and becomes a gas when it is used to fuel appliances.

    About Gas to Propane Conversion

    • Converting gas appliances to propane generally requires replacement of gas orifices, burners and appliance regulators to operate with the new fuel source, according to the Propane101 website. Natural gas uses a much lower pressure than propane, so the conversion must accommodate this difference in pressure ratios. A correct conversion will eliminate safety problems from appliance malfunction between the two pressure rates. Only attempt a conversion if the manufacturer’s instructions indicate that it can be safely done by you or a certified technician.

    Gas to LP Conversion Kits

    • Natural gas appliance orifices are much larger than propane types, so this difference must be reduced with a conversion kit. Frequently, manufacturers will offer their own conversion kits for natural gas to propane changes. If your brand does not offer one, however, do-it-yourselfers can still find conversion kits made by third-party manufacturers. These kits offer adaptable parts that can be used on a number of gas appliance models for proper conversion to LP gas. Gas to LP conversion kits are available at most large home improvement stores and may also be available at appliance retail stores.

    Conversion Techniques

    • Before attempting a conversion operation, make sure to unplug the dryer and turn off the gas to the unit. Converting a gas clothes dryer to LP power generally consists of replacing the burner orifice, as well as the gas regulator vent. This operation often uses a brass fitting with a block-open pin, according to DavesRepair.com, and adapts the appliance for use with propane. You must then replace the orifice metering plug that regulates the amount of gas that enters the burning chamber. Check for leaks by applying a small amount of dishwashing liquid in water to see if bubbles appear. Tighten the fittings until no bubbles are visible. Generally, all conversions to LP are labeled so that those working on the appliances in the future are aware of conversions having been made.
