How to Troubleshoot the Light Air Switch for a Hot Tub

Many hot tubs use air switches to control electrical functions such as submerged lights in the tub. The switch activates with a burst of air pressure when the button is pressed, eliminating the need for electrical wiring at the control console. The switch itself is wired to a 110-volt circuit in the wiring harness connected to the pump, motor and other components below the hot tub. Use a multimeter to troubleshoot the switch and diagnose basic problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the electricity to the hot tub at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the hot tub access panel to the lower side of the tub. Follow the path of the flexible plastic tube from the underside of the control panel to the light air switch underneath the tub.

    • 3

Press the tabs on the side of the switch to release the two wires attached to the switch.

    • 4

Set the mutlimeter to test for ohms and touch the two metal rods on the device to the switch contacts. Ask an assistant to press the air switch at the control console on the hot tub. If the multimeter registers a zero display, the air switch is defective. If the meter displays a slight reading, which will vary with the hot tub model, continue troubleshooting.

Pull the cylindrical fuse from its compartment below the hot tub. The compartment is typically labeled as a fuse box. Inspect the fuse and replace if it is burned out.
