How to Connect a Spade Connector for a Gas Grill

A spade connector is a type of electrical connection that holds a single wire to a contact. On a gas grill, spade connectors are typically used to wire the ignitor to the spark module that lights the burner. Connectors are sold in two basic types. One is Y-shaped and flat that connects below a loosened screw knob. The other is crimped and slides onto a flat electrical contact. Replacing and connecting the spade connector takes only a few minutes and basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the valve in the fuel hose connected to the gas grill by twisting the hose knob clockwise.

    • 2

Follow the path of the wire from the back of the grill control panel to its connection point beneath the main grill or to a side burner if your model is equipped with extra burners.

    • 3

Grip the old spade connector with your thumb and forefinger to pull it off of the contact beneath the grill.

    • 4

Cut the wire immediately behind the old spade connector as close as possible. Strip 1/4-inch of insulation from the wire end then twist the bare wires together to form a single strand.

    • 5

Insert the wire into the holder at the base of the new spade connector. Crimp the end of the connector with needle-nose pliers and use gentle pressure to secure the wire in place. On some spade connectors, you will need to twist the base of the connector clockwise to lock the wire in place without the pliers.

Slide the connector onto the contact below the grill. If the contact has a screw knob, twist the knob counterclockwise and slide the Y-shaped prongs onto the spade connector under the knob. Twist the knob clockwise to tighten and secure the connector in place.
