How to Fix a Squeaky Dryer Belt on the GE Profile

The GE Profile dryer uses a belt woven through a pulley system to rotate the drum as the blower pushes hot air through your clothes. The idler pulley keeps tension on the dryer belt to keep the dryer functional. Over time, the belt and the idler pulley can begin to squeak from wear. Eventually, the squeaking belt and pulley can break and the drum will no longer turn. Replacing the belt and pulley can stop the squeak and add years to your dryer’s life.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the GE Profile dryer from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Open the dryer door to access the screws along the top lip of the dryer door opening. Remove the screws to release the top of the dryer. Lift up on the top and lean it back against the laundry room wall behind the GE Profile dryer.

    • 3

Remove the screw from the inside top front corners of the open GE dryer. Lift the front panel off the dryer frame. Carefully move the panel to one side of the dryer or the other to avoid disconnecting the wiring from the door panel.

    • 4

Take a digital picture of the idler pulley and drum belt configuration around the pulley and motor. You need to have the exact belt configuration when replacing the belt, and the picture will help. The idler pulley and dryer motor are located to the right of the drum and on the floor of the dryer.

    • 5

Push the idler pulley toward the dryer drum to loosen the tension on the drum belt. Pull the belt off the idler pulley and the motor.

    • 6

Grab the retaining clip holding the idler pulley on the idler arm with needle-nose pliers. Be careful to not damage it. Pull the pulley off the idler arm.

    • 7

Slide a new idler pulley onto the idler arm. Secure the pulley with the retaining clip.

    • 8

Remove the old drum belt from the dryer drum. Wrap the new dryer belt around the drum. Weave the new dryer drum belt around the motor pulley and the idler pulley using the picture you took previously as a reference. Rotate the dryer drum clockwise to align the new belt.

Reassemble the GE Profile dryer by reversing the steps you used to disassemble it. Plug the Profile back into the wall outlet.
