How to Adjust the Regulator on a Natural Gas Space Heater

Natural gas space heaters connect to the fuel line in the building through a pressure regulator that controls the flow of gas. This prevents the burners from overheating or jetting flames too high for the heater to manage. Because natural gas pressures can vary among localities, you may need to adjust the regulator if you move to a new home or if there is a fluctuation in the municipal gas supply. Adjusting the regulator takes only a few minutes.

Shut off the heater at the burner control and wait for the appliance to cool. Locate the regulator on the back of the space heater where the gas line attaches to the appliance. The recommended pressure for the heater should be stamped or embossed on the regulator. If it is not, contact the manufacturer.

Close the valve in the natural gas line connected to the heater. The valve is equipped with a lever that twists 90 degrees clockwise to shut off the gas.

    • 3

Twist the knob on the regulator to the recommended setting for the appliance, using an adjustable wrench. The pressure settings are marked in increments on the regulator. Turning the knob clockwise typically lowers the pressure flowing through the system on most regulators. Turning counterclockwise increases the pressure flow through the system.
