How to Install an Idler Pulley in a Maytag Washing Machine

Maytag, a division of Whirlpool Corp., produces both belt-drive and direct-drive washing machines for residential customers. Maytag washing machines with a belt-drive system use a belt and pulley assembly to rotate the washer tub. The idler pulley is the assembly component that's used to set the belt tension. If the belt in your Maytag washing machine has trouble keeping the correct tension, it may be time to replace the idler pulley. Installing an idler pulley in a Maytag washer requires some disassembly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from its power source to avoid serious electrical injury while installing the idler pulley. Find the water-supply valves on the wall behind the machine. Rotate the hot and cold water valves clockwise to close them.

    • 2

Remove the two Phillips screws along the bottom edge of the front panel. Lift the panel up, then pull it toward you to separate it from the appliance cabinet. Stand the removed panel against a wall.

    • 3

Place a towel underneath the pump assembly on the left side of the washing machine cabinet. Remove the clamps securing the two hoses to the assembly. Pull the hoses from the pump-assembly connectors and allow them to drain onto the towel.

    • 4

Remove the idler tension spring from the clip on the front of the motor mounting bracket. Lift up the spring with a pair of needle-nose pliers to unhook it from the clip; work gently to avoid damaging the fragile tension spring. Reach into the appliance cabinet and slide the belt off of the drive pulley. Press the locking tab on the top of the motor-harness wiring connector. Pull the connector to detach it from the harness; do not pull the wires themselves.

    • 5

Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts that hold the motor assembly in place; the number of bolts varies by model. Pull the assembly out of the appliance cabinet and lay it on its side.

    • 6

Take off the nut, washer and bolt securing the idler-pulley assembly to the motor-mounting bracket. Set aside the removed idler lever and pulley.

    • 7

Lubricate the points on the motor-mounting bracket that come into contact with the idler lever. Only use a very small amount of light lubricating oil; using too much oil may negatively affect the machine's performance.

    • 8

Hold the replacement idler lever and pulley against the motor mounting bracket. Line up the bolt holes on the components. Secure the idler assembly, using the removed nut, water and bolt.
