How to Install Elements in a Stove

The elements -- those metal components that get red-hot and generate heat -- are the most important parts of any range. When the elements fail to heat properly, it's time to replace them. It's a simple procedure any electric stove owner can easily accomplish in a few minutes' time, whether the faulty element is a surface -- on top of the stove -- bake or broil element. The amount of electricity that flows through an electric oven can easily kill a human -- unplug the stove before attempting to replace any element.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement element
  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Needle nose pliers

Instructions

  1. The Surface Element

    • 1

Pull the element toward you gently until it unplugs from the range. Lift it out completely, then lift the drip pan out of the hole.

    • 2

Compare the new element to the old one. Depending on the manufacturer, it will connect to the stove in one of two levels on side-by-side lips. Raise or lower the element connection point on the stove, if necessary. Unscrew the connection point, move it to the unused lip and screw it back on.

    • 3

Drop the drip pan back into the hole by aligning its opening with the element connector.

    • 4

Push the new element gently into the connector at a slight angle and rest it on the inside rim of the drop pan.

    The Bake Element

    • 5

Remove the baking racks from the oven.

    • 6

Remove the nuts holding the bake element to the back oven.

    • 7

Pull the bake element forward 2 or 3 inches, exposing the bake element wires, which are attached to the bake element by push-on, crimped wire connectors.

    • 8

Label the wires with left, middle and right on a bit of masking tape, if there are more than two wires.

    • 9

Unplug the element from the connectors and remove it from the oven.

    • 10

Reconnect the new element to the proper connectors. Snug the connectors to the element by barely squeezing them with needle nose pliers.

    • 11

Push the wires back into the back oven wall and attach the new element with the nuts you removed previously.

    The Broil Element

    • 12

Remove the bake racks from the oven.

    • 13

Remove the nuts of the brackets that hold the broil element to the ceiling of the oven.

    • 14

Remove the nuts that hold the broil element to the back of the oven, while supporting the element with one hand.

    • 15

Pull the broil element 2 or 3 inches from the back of the oven, disconnect it from the two wire connectors and remove it from the oven.

    • 16

Attach the wire connectors to the new element and gently tighten them with needle nose pliers, if necessary.

    • 17

Hold the element against the back wall and attach it with the nuts you removed previously. While supporting the element, attach the new element with the other nuts.
