The Gas Oven in the Wall Is Making a Ticking Noise When It Is Off

Gas ovens produce a variety of sounds while active. The ovens continue to remain somewhat noisy well after they are disabled because of the oven's metal interior expanding during use. This makes a ticking or popping sound, and does not signify a problem with the appliance. Alternatively, a persistent ticking sound hours after powering off the appliance might indicate an ignitor issue.
  1. Cooldown

    • The oven ticks and pops while it is in the cleaning or cooking process, and continues to tick until the interior temperature reduces to its natural, unheated setting. The self-clean setting on the oven dramatically raises the temperature to eliminate interior spills, and continues to tick and crackle while the oven attempts to cool itself down.

    Ignitor Issues

    • The ignitor in the wall oven may be unable to maintain a flame for the pilot, which results in the ignitor constantly clicking to push air from the gas line and reestablish the pilot. The pilot must remain lit for the gas oven to function properly when turned on, so it may be an indication of a problem with your gas line if the oven continues to click.

    Automatic Settings

    • Even if the oven was not manually turned on to bake or broil, it may be in the process of self-cleaning, baking or broiling because of an automatic timer function, depending on your oven model. The automatic bake/broil/self-clean starts the cooking or cleaning process based on previous cycle configurations, and requires manually pressing "Cancel" or "Off" to disable the process. Once disabled, the oven eventually stops ticking when it is no longer active.

    Advanced Issues

    • The ignitor may need to be replaced if the wall oven continues to click, as it is unable to provide a steady flame required for cooking and cleaning. Contact the manufacturer or a certified appliance technician to inspect your wall oven and check your gas supply line for possible problems that could prevent the gas from reaching the wall oven.
