How to Replace the Bearing on a Maytag Atlantis

The Maytag Atlantis is a residential, top-loading washing machine with an oversize stainless steel washing tub, five automatic washing cycles and six temperature settings. If your machine makes a screeching noise during the spin cycle, there may be a problem with the washer's bearing and seal component. Replacing it requires extensive disassembly and several specialized tools. Novice do-it-yourselfers may wish to leave this arduous repair to a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the machine from the wall outlet to avoid electrical injury. Find the hot and cold water valves on the wall behind the washer; rotate them clockwise to shut off the water supply.

    • 2

Slide a flat blade screwdriver between the top and front washer panels to locate the wire retaining clips securing the top panel to the appliance cabinet. Push the clips to the side with the tip of the screwdriver to release them. Raise the top panel and tilt it back to rest on its hinge stops. Remove the two screws at the top of the front panel, using a hex head screwdriver. Pull the top of the panel toward you, then lift up to disengage the bottom retaining clips. Lean it against the wall.

    • 3

Push down on the plastic tub cover while lifting the eight perimeter locking tabs with the flat blade screwdriver; set the tub cover aside. Remove the fabric softener dispenser and agitator cap from the top of the agitator assembly; pry the components free with the flat blade screwdriver, if necessary. Hold the base of the agitator and remove the retaining screw and washer using the hex head screwdriver. Lift the agitator assembly out of the inner tub and place it on a towel.

    • 4

Remove the four hex head mounting screws from the inside of the inner tub. Lift it up and out of the washer cabinet. Pry the "O" retaining ring from the agitator shaft with a small flat blade screwdriver. Remove the shaft seal nut using a seal nut removal tool.

    • 5

Pull the inlet hose off the port on the side of the outer tub. Take out the hex head screws securing the outer tub to the tub support. Remove the hex head mounting screws from the inside of the outer tub. Disconnect the pressure switch hose from the air bell and lift the outer tub out of the cabinet.

    • 6

Rotate the large hub nut counterclockwise, using a spanner wrench, to free the hub assembly from the shaft.

    • 7

Unhook the suspension springs from the tub support, using a spring removal tool. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the braces to the tub support. Remove the three hex head mounting screws under the tub support to free the bearing and seal component.

Clean the tub support with rubbing alcohol and a sponge to remove greasy buildup. Hold the replacement bearing and seal to the tub support and line up the screw holes on the two components. Replace and tighten the removed hex head mounting screws.
