How to Replace the Water Pump in a Carpet Shampooer

Many carpet shampooer models operate with a water pump to force heated water and cleaning solution across the cleaner heads or roller brushes. This ensures an even distribution of water and cleaner on the carpet fibers as the shampooer rolls over the carpet surface. If the pump is defective, it must be replaced to use the appliance. Buy a replacement part from the shampooer manufacturer or an appliance parts store. Installing the new pump takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the shampooer power cord from the wall outlet and turn the appliance upside-down on a level surface to access the cover plate on your particular model.

    • 2

Remove the cover plate using a screwdriver. The pump is inside the shampooer connected to the motor drive shaft. On many shampooers, the pump is L-shaped, with two hose connections on a plunger-type component. The plunger moves in and out to pump fluids. Some pumps resemble two cylinders, with one fitting inside the other.

    • 3

Loosen the screws in the clamps attached to the pump to pull off the two hoses.

    • 4

Loosen the screws holding the pump to the inside of the shampooer, either to the cabinet or to a support bracket, using a screwdriver. Remove the old pump by pulling it off the drive shaft.

    • 5

Set the new part in the same orientation as the old pump and secure it to the cabinet or mounting bracket with the screws and screwdriver.

    • 6

Attach the two hoses to the pump and secure them by tightening the screw in each clamp.

    • 7

Replace the cover panel with the screws and screwdriver.
