How to Install a Dryer Drum Glide on a Maytag

Excessive noise emitting from your Maytag dryer, such as grinding, squealing or clanking, and damage appearing on your clothes during the drying cycle are symptoms of worn dryer drum glides. The two dryer drum glides support the front of the drum on your Maytag dryer drum. They keep it from sagging and allowing gaps to appear between the drum and the front bulkhead. Once one or both of these drum glides fail, replacement is necessary. Replace and install both dryer drum glides at the same time to avoid uneven wear on the glides and additional maintenance in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your Maytag's power cord from the 30-amp wall outlet in the laundry area.

    • 2

Find the two Phillips-head screws holding the bottom of the front dryer panel to the dryer cabinet. These two screws are located on the right side and the left side of the front panel about 6 inches up from the floor. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove these two screws.

    • 3

Grab the bottom of the front panel on both sides and lift up, rotating the panel out. This releases the two clips connected to the top of the front panel from the top of the dryer cabinet and exposes the bulkhead and the door switch wires.

    • 4

Note the location of the two wires connected to the door switch. Use your fingers to pull the wire connectors from the switch on the front panel and the retaining clip holding the wires to the panel. Move the front panel of the Maytag dryer out of the way.

    • 5

Find the four hex-head screws holding the bulkhead onto the front of the dryer cabinet. The screws are located in each of the four corners on the bulkhead, attaching the bulkhead to the side panels of the dryer. Use a nut driver to remove the screws.

    • 6

Pull the bulkhead from the dryer cabinet to expose the two dryer drum glides attached to the inside bottom of the bulkhead opening. Move the bulkhead to a sturdy work surface and lay the bulkhead down with the drum glides facing up.

    • 7

Note the installation of the original drum glides on the metal drum glide brackets. The drum glide attaches to the bracket through two slots at each end.

    • 8

Push up on the small end of the drum glide from beneath the bracket to release this end of the glide. Grab the glide with your fingers and twist it one-quarter of a turn to release the T-shaped end of the drum glide from the bracket. Repeat with the remaining drum glide and discard both.

    • 9

Insert the T-shaped end of the replacement drum glide into the bracket. Twist the drum glide one-quarter of a turn to line it up with the metal bracket. Insert the small end of the glide into the opening at the opposite end of the bracket.

    • 10

Position the bulkhead onto the Maytag dryer cabinet ensuring that the new drum glides set beneath the dryer drum. Use the four hex-head screws you removed previously to reattach the bulkhead.

    • 11

Reconnect the door switch wires to the door switch on the front panel of the dryer. Secure the switch wires to the retaining clip on the front panel prior to reattaching the panel to the dryer cabinet.

    • 12

Hold the front panel at a 45-degree angle to the front of the dryer cabinet. Slide the front panel up beneath the top of the dryer cabinet, positioning the clips on the front panel behind the slots on the top panel of the dryer cabinet.

    • 13

Replace the two screws in the bottom of the front panel to secure the panel to the cabinet. Connect the Maytag dryer’s power cord to the 30-amp dryer outlet in the wall.
