How to Replace the Microwave Door Frame on a Sears Kenmore Microwave

Kenmore microwaves are rebranded Whirlpool appliances sold in Sears department stores. If the door frame on your Sears Kenmore microwave cracks, it can allow harmful radiation to escape. A small crack in any of the door assembly components makes the appliance completely unusable. Fortunately, you can replace the broken door frame to restore the microwave to working order. Replacing the door frame on a Sears Kenmore microwave is a simple task that you should have no trouble completing in less than an hour.
  1. Safety First

    • Microwave ovens are one of the most dangerous appliances for do-it-yourselfers to repair. An internal energy storage device known as a high volt capacitor retains a strong electric charge and makes electrocution possible even after the appliance has been disconnected from its power source. Unplug the microwave, and do not tamper with any internal components, while repairing the door. It's also a good idea to test for microwave radiation leakage after replacing the door frame. Microwave test kits are available from home improvement stores and online retailers; use the kit according to the directions on the packaging.

    Door Removal

    • Taking the entire door assembly off the microwave is the easiest way to replace the frame. Open the microwave door and remove the plastic hinge covers, if applicable to your model: there are small retaining pins securing the door to its hinges; take out the pins and remove the door. Lay the door on a padded surface with the inside facing up.

    Door Frame Replacement

    • The door assembly components are held in place with a framelike component known as a choke cover. Pry off the choke cover with a small flat-head screwdriver. Slowly work the screwdriver around the edge of the cover until it pops free. Unclip the retaining tabs securing the door frame to the door assembly. You can simply snap the new door frame in place. Reverse the disassembly process to reassemble and replace the microwave door.

    Warranty Information

    • Replacing any of the components of your Sears Kenmore microwave will void its warranty. If the appliance is still covered under warranty, then, you may want to have a Sears Kenmore authorized technician replace the door frame. Read the terms of the warranty agreement or contact Kenmore customer service for additional information. For a minor repair like a door frame replacement, you may be able to obtain written permission from Kenmore to complete the repair yourself.
