Replace the Water Tube in the Freezer Door of a KitchenAid Superba

Whirlpool Corp. manufactures the KitchenAid Superba, which is a side-by-side refrigerator with a water dispenser built into the freezer door. The dispenser's operation involves a tube that runs through a channel in the door to the bottom, where it emerges from the lower door hinge inside the appliance. If the tube leaks water from the dispenser, it needs to be replaced. Replacing the tube takes less than one hour using basic tools. The entire repair can be completed from the front of the appliance without dismantling the freezer door.

Instructions

    • 1

      Close the water valve on the line that connects from the Superba to the pipe below the kitchen sink. The valve knob turns clockwise to shut off the water.

      Hold a drinking glass to the dispenser, and fill the glass with water until the dispenser slows to produce only a drip of water. This task empties the water tube.

      Unplug the Superba's power cord from its wall socket as a safety precaution.

      Pull up on the dispenser housing at its front bottom edge to pull the housing out of the freezer door.

      Remove the slotted screws around the frame of the water dispenser where the frame fits flush with the front of the freezer door. Use a screwdriver for that task. Remove the frame.

      Take out the screw in the upper right corner that holds the grille over the dispenser lever.

      Grip the nozzle for the water dispenser with your thumb and forefinger, wiggling the nozzle back and forth gently to pull it loose.

      Open the freezer door. Face the door's interior side, and disconnect the water tube from the door interior side's lower right corner where the tube connects behind the door hinge. Pull the tube straight out of the port on the Superba frame.

      Grab the nozzle from the front of the water dispenser, and pull gently to remove the water tube from the door.

      Insert the new, replacement water tube into the opening above the water dispenser, and guide it gently into the door. The tube slides along the channel inside the door where it will emerge in the bottom corner.

      Connect the water tube to the port on the Superba frame in the bottom corner.

      Push the nozzle on the other end of the tube into the mounting hole on the water dispenser until it snaps in place.

      Replace the grille over the water nozzle by inserting and tightening in the upper right corner the screw you removed previously.

      Attach the frame to the front of the dispenser opening using the screws removed in Step 5.

      Align the dispenser housing with the frame, and push the housing into place.

      Plug in the Superba power cord. Turn the knob on the water valve counterclockwise.
