How to Change the Heat Insulation on a Smooth Top Range

Insulation inside a stove, oven or smooth top range helps retain heat for maximum efficiency. While heat resistant, the insulation material may lose its effectiveness over time and begin to wear out even though the range can still be used, perhaps for years to come. Replacing the insulation involves opening the cabinet to remove the old material. Measure the insulation width so that you purchase the correct replacement material as insulation is sold in varying sizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all controls on the range and wait for the unit to cool down. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the screws that hold the metal back plate onto the range with a screwdriver. Set aside this plate and save all hardware.

    • 3

Put on work gloves then pull out the old insulation material from the metal channels inside the range.

    • 4

Use a measuring tape to determine the dimensions of the insulation material so you can buy the correct replacement size from a hardware or appliance store.

    • 5

Slide the new insulation into the channels inside the range. The insulation must lay flat in the channels and not bunch up or fold in on itself. Correctly installed insulation should slide easily in and out of the channels.

    • 6

Attach the metal back cover to the range with the screws and screwdriver.

    • 7

Plug in the power cord to the appliance.
