An Electric Oven Broiler Stuck

If an oven has a faulty mechanism, the electric heating element that fuels the broiler will get stuck and will be unable to turn off. Plainly a serious fire hazard, a stuck broiler controller requires a remedy as soon as possible. Troubleshoot to diagnose and possibly fix one of the several components inside the oven that may be causing the issue. Contact a professional if you are unable to undertake the repairs on your own.
  1. Faulty Thermostat

    • The thermostat is the mechanism that monitors the temperature inside the oven and against the burner. The broiler will turn on and off to maintain a proper temperature, whether it be low, medium or high. If the thermostat is broken and is reading a lower-than-accurate temperature, it can cause the broiler to stay on. If this is the case, the baking setting will not work properly either. Replace the thermostat.

    Broken Switch

    • In some cases, the cancel switch on the control panel is broken and you will be unable to turn the broiler off. Instead, you’ll have to unplug the oven from the wall to switch off the broiler or the bake setting. Most electric ovens have one cancel button for the bake and broil settings. In that instance, the button will not work on either setting and requires replacement. Contact a professional to replace the switch unless you have electrical experience.

    Broken Selector Switch

    • The selector switch is the mechanism that sends signals from the thermostat to the control panel to adjust the temperature of the broiler. If the broiler gets stuck on one heat setting, it may be because there is a short in the selector switch. If the selector switch is broken it is likely that the heat in the bake setting is not working either. Replace it if you notice that this is the case.

    Faulty Heating Element

    • Electric broiler heating elements that are stuck in the off position may simply be broken. The heating element is a long rod that lines the top of the oven. If it cracks, get nicked or gets sliced it will stop heating and will remain off. An igniter is attached to the heating element and is responsible for turning it on. If it breaks, the broiler will not turn on. Replace either component if you find it to be faulty.
