How to Replace the Light Bulb on a Whirlpool Combo Microwave Oven Unit

The Whirlpool combo microwave oven unit includes a ventilation hood above the appliance, which hangs over a stove or kitchen cabinets. The combo unit contains two light bulbs. One illuminates the interior of the microwave. The other provides a work light over the cooking or counter surface below the microwave. Replacing either bulb takes only a few minutes using basic tools. Buy a new bulb from an appliance parts shop or hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off electricity to the microwave by turning off the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Take out the 10 screws in the bottom of the microwave around the edges to lower the panel.

    • 3

Remove the single screw holding the lamp socket for the interior microwave bulb. Pull down on the socket, taking care not to stretch or break the two attached wires. Unscrew the old bulb and replace it with a new bulb.

    • 4

Insert the lamp socket assembly into the mounting hole and secure it with the screw.

    • 5

Remove the two screws holding the clear cover plate over the work light, using a screwdriver.

    • 6

Unscrew the bulb underneath the cover plate and install a new bulb.

    • 7

Replace the clear cover plate with the two screws that you removed.

    • 8

Raise the bottom plate on the microwave to the bottom edge of the appliance and secure it with the 10 screws that you removed earlier.

    • 9

      Turn on the circuit breaker.
