How to Adjust a Kenmore Dryer Air Shutter

An air shutter on a dryer controls the airflow to the flame in the gas burner. They are only available on Kenmore gas dryers that run on either propane or natural gas. If the gas flame doesn't get enough air, it will blow out because the flame needs oxygen to light. If the gas flame gets too much air, it will burn too hot and create soot inside your dryer.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Lift the cover plate off the bottom of the Kenmore dryer. Loosen the screws that hold the panel over the gas flame. Remove the panel.

    • 3

Locate the air shutter, which is the little panel next to the gas flame. Use the screwdriver to turn the screw on the air shutter to the right to reduce the airflow, or to the left to increase the airflow to the flame.

    • 4

Place the panel back on the door and screw it in place. Place the cover plate back on the dryer.
