How to Change the Water Valve in a Maytag Performa Washer

The Maytag Performa is a washing machine that operates with a water inlet valve to fill the laundry tub for cleaning clothes. The two inlets on the valve connect to the hot and cold water hoses attached to the rear of the Performa. If the valve stops working, the washer will not fill with water, or the tub may fill only with hot or cold water, no matter which temperature setting is selected on the front control panel. Changing the valve in the appliance takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Performa power cord from the wall socket.

    • 2

Close the two water faucets on the wall behind the Performa. Each faucet is connected to a hose that hooks up to the washer.

    • 3

Twist the couplers on the end of the two supply hoses counterclockwise where they attach to the back of the Performa, using pliers. Lower the hoses into a bucket.

    • 4

Squeeze the clamp around the drain hose on the back of the Performa with pliers to pull off the hose and lower the end into the bucket.

    • 5

Unscrew and remove the screws holding the rear access plate to the Performa cabinet. Pull off the plate and set out of the way. The valve assembly is at the top of the appliance where the two supply hoses were connected.

    • 6

Press the lock tab on the plug that is wired to the valve assembly to release the power plug from the socket on the valve. The wires carry electrical signals that direct the valve to open and close.

    • 7

Squeeze the clamp around the hose attached to the underside of the valve. Pull off the hose.

    • 8

Take out the screws in the mounting plate on the valve to release the part from the inside of the Performa.

    • 9

Attach the new valve to the mounting bracket using the screws and screwdriver.

    • 10

Connect the fill hose to the underside of the valve using the clamp around the hose.

    • 11

Connect the power plug to the new valve by pushing in the plug until it clicks.

    • 12

Attach the rear panel to the Performa using the screws and screwdriver.

    • 13

Reconnect the drain hose to the drain outlet on the Performa by squeezing the clamp and sliding the hose onto the outlet.

    • 14

Screw on the supply hoses to the hot and cold water inlets on the back of the Performa, using pliers. The inlets are part of the new valve assembly and protrude through the two holes in the back panel.

    • 15

Unscrew the knobs on the water faucets to check for leaks behind the Performa. Tighten the hose couplers to stop any leaking.

    • 16

Plug in the Performa's power cord.
