How to Fix a Thermal Coupler in a Profile Dryer

The thermal coupler in a GE Profile clothes dryer acts as a safety fuse to prevent the appliance from overheating, potentially starting a fire. This part is also known variously as a thermal fuse, thermocoupler and temperature switch. When heated to a preset temperature, the thermal coupler opens, shutting off the dryer. When the appliance cools, the thermal coupler closes again and normal operation can resume. If the GE Profile will not heat, try troubleshooting the thermal coupler with a multimeter. If the part is bad, fixing the dryer involves replacing the thermal coupler.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Profile's power cord from the wall outlet. Slide the dryer forward to reach the back panel. If the Profile has recently been used, wait for the appliance to reach room temperature.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the service plate on the rear of the Profile, using a screwdriver, to access the interior of the appliance. The thermal coupler on a GE Profile is located at the top of the heating element case. The case is a round, metal container in the center.

    • 3

Take off the two wires on the thermal coupler by pulling the Y-shaped clip on each wire end.

    • 4

Dial the multimeter to test for circuit resistance, which is the ohms setting.

    • 5

Place each test wand on the meter on one of the thermal coupler's contacts. A zero reading means the thermal coupler is functioning normally. Any reading of resistance indicated the thermal coupler is defective. The part must be replaced.

    • 6

Remove the two screws holding the thermal coupler's mounting plate on the Profile's heating element case. Remove the defective part.

    • 7

Place the new thermal coupler in position on the heating element case and secure it with the two screws.

    • 8

Slide the clips on the two wires onto the two terminals on the new thermal coupler.

    • 9

Attach the service plate to the back of the Profile using the screws and screwdriver.

    • 10

Plug in the Profile power cord.
