How to Clear a Pump Impeller on a GE Washing Machine

The pump on your GE washing machine not only pumps water in and out of your washtub, it can also transfer small objects through the drain hose from the washtub. The pump assembly comes equipped with a built-in filter to catch any of these small items. Occasionally, something small can slip past the filter, winding up in the pump motor and impeding the impeller rotation. Before you call a service technician when your washtub fails to drain completely after completing the wash cycle, inspect and clear the pump impeller.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your GE washer from the electrical outlet in the wall. Detach the screws along the bottom front edge of the washer to remove the bottom panel. Pull on the bottom edge of the panel to release it from the GE washer.

    • 2

Lay a towel under the pump assembly located in the right front bottom of the washer. Turn the filter cap located on the front of the pump counterclockwise to release any water left in the pump.

    • 3

Release the two pump hoses connected to the back of the washer pump assembly by squeezing the two ends of the hose clamps together with pliers. Slide the clamps back onto the hoses, then pull the hoses from the pump and filter.

    • 4

Remove the two wires from the right side of the pump motor. Mark the wire locations to make reinstallation easier. Grab the terminal adapters connected to the ends of the wires and gently wiggle the wires off the connectors located on the pump.

    • 5

Find the two screws holding the pump assembly to the floor of the GE washer. These screws are located on the feet of the pump to the back right and left of the pump filter. Remove the two screws so you can pull the pump assembly from the washer.

    • 6

Position the pump assembly where the filter faces away from you and the wire connections on the pump motor face you. Look for the two screws on each side of the pump motor. They are located between the pump hose connection and the pump motor.

    • 7

Remove the two screws holding the pump motor on the pump assembly. Pull the motor from the pump to access the pump impeller. The impeller is located on the pump motor.

    • 8

Look for any debris inside the impeller opening on the filter side of the pump assembly. Wipe the area clean with a soft cloth and cotton swabs if necessary to remove bits of lint.

    • 9

Wipe down the impeller with the cloth and remove anything from the impeller that might impede its rotation. Replace the impeller on the pump assembly, securing it with the pump screws you previously removed.

    • 10

Insert the pump assembly into the GE washer. Use the screws you removed from the pump feet to secure the pump assembly to the bottom of the washer floor.

    • 11

Slide the pump hoses onto the pump assembly outlet and inlet connections. Squeeze the ends of the hose clamp with pliers. Slide the clamps onto the pump’s inlet and outlet connections. Release the clamp to secure the hoses on the pump assembly.

    • 12

Replace the filter cap on the pump filter. Reinstall the bottom panel on the GE washer, securing it to the cabinet with the screws you previously removed. Plug your GE washer into the electrical outlet.
