How to Change a Kenmore Washer Valve

The washer valve in a Kenmore washing machine allows hot and cold water to flow into the appliance at specific times during the cycle. Depending on the temperature selection, the valve also adjusts the mix of hot and cold water. The valve is mounted behind the rear access panel where the supply hoses connect to the Kenmore unit. With the right instruction and tools, changing the valve can take less than an hour. You can buy a replacement valve from Sears, which sells Kenmore washers, or an appliance repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the power cord.

    • 2

Turn the knobs on the two faucets behind the Kenmore washer to the right until tight.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the two supply hoses from the connection pipes on the Kenmore, using pliers. Catch the excess water from each hose in a bucket.

    • 4

Grip the clamp on the large corrugated hose with pliers and squeeze to pull the hose off the washer.

    • 5

Remove the screws in the access plate to pull it off the Kenmore unit. The valve is near the top where the two supply hoses hook up.

    • 6

Squeeze the clamp on the rubber tube on the left side of the valve with pliers to pull off the tube.

    • 7

Disconnect the two wires from the metal clips on top of the valve.

    • 8

Remove the mounting screws holding the valve to the inside of the washer. Remove the entire part.

    • 9

Line up the new valve in the same orientation as the old part and secure it with the screws supplied with the replacement part or use the screws you removed in Step 8.

    • 10

Attach the rubber tube and clamp to the outlet on the side of the valve, using pliers.

    • 11

Clip the two wires onto the metal terminals on top of the new valve in the same orientation as the old wires were attached to the old valve. Each wire has a connector that slides on a terminal.

    • 12

Fasten the access panel to the back of the Kenmore washer with screws.

    • 13

Attach the corrugated hose to the drain pipe on the back of the unit with the clamp and pliers.

    • 14

Connect the two supply hoses to the two pipes on the back of the Kenmore washer and tighten each with pliers. Open the faucets to check for leaks. Tighten the connections with pliers to stop minor water leaks.

    • 15

Plug in the power cord to the wall outlet.
