How to Change the Handle on a Maytag Microwave

Whirlpool Corp. produces an extensive line of microwave ovens and other home appliances under the Maytag brand. Whirlpool-built Maytag microwaves feature a traditional pull door handle rather than the push buttons found on microwaves from many other manufacturers. When used frequently, these handles can crack or break. Although changing the handle on a Maytag microwave oven requires the partial disassembly of the door, the process is fairly simple and straightforward.
  1. Parts Availability

    • Don't be tempted to order a generic replacement part. The handle must be replaced with one specific to your model. Contact Maytag customer service at 1-800-344-1274 in the United States or 1-800-688-2002 in Canada to place your order. Replacement handles may also be purchased from appliance parts retailers that are authorized to sell Maytag or Whirlpool parts.

    Safety First

    • Appliance repairs may only be considered successful if they're performed safely. Repairing an appliance, such as a microwave, without taking the proper safety precautions puts you at risk for electrical shock that can lead to serious injury or death. Many novice do-it-yourselfers shy away from repairing their electrical appliances for this reason. Avoiding electrical injury while replacing the handle on a Maytag microwave is as simple as unplugging the appliance from its power source before beginning your repairs.

    Access

    • You must remove the black plastic trim around the inside of the door. To do so, insert a putty knife between the trim and the door frame and wiggle the putty knife gently to create a very small gap. There are retaining tabs along the edges of the trim. Insert the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver into the small slot next to each tab and lift gently to pry off the trim. The handle is held to the inside of the door with two Phillips screws. Remove the screws to free the handle. Line up the screw holes on the back of the replacement handle with the holes on the door. Replace the screws and snap the black plastic trim back into place.

    Warranty Information

    • Many Maytag microwaves come with a limited warranty that covers the replacement of certain components. Performing unauthorized, do-it-yourself repairs on the microwave may void the warranty and leave you responsible for the cost of replacing parts that would have otherwise been covered by the agreement. Consult the terms of your warranty or contact Maytag customer service for additional information. In some cases, you may be able to obtain written permission from Maytag to perform the desired repair.
