How to Replace the Valve Top Burner on a Jenn-Air Cooktop

A Jenn-Air cooktop that uses natural gas has a valve connected to each burner below the appliance surface. The valves are connected to the main gas line that attaches below the cooktop to the residential pipe. If a burner valve wears out, the individual part can be replaced with a new valve available from Jenn-Air or an appliance parts store. Replacing the valve takes less than an hour to do with common household tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the handle on the gas line underneath the appliance 90 degrees clockwise to shut off fuel to the stove.

    • 2

Lift off the burner grate and cap from the burner top.

    • 3

Loosen the nut on the pipe connection directly underneath the burner valve you want to replace with a wrench. Twist the nut counterclockwise to disengage the valve assembly from the pipe.

    • 4

Unclip the wire from the ignitor next to the burner valve. Twist the larger nut on the underside of the cooktop counterclockwise to release the burner base from the cooktop surface.

    • 5

Lift the burner base and round valve burner in the center off the cooktop. Remove the round valve burner from the center of the burner base.

    • 6

Lower a new valve burner into the burner base and twist to align the two parts. Place the assembly onto the cooktop surface and turn it to engage the notches on the burner base with the cooktop. Tighten the larger nut on the underside of the cooktop.

    • 7

Apply pipe sealant to the threaded pipe connection below the cooktop with the brush on the underside of the sealant cap. Twist the smaller nut on the valve burner onto the treated pipe. Tighten it down with the wrench.

    • 8

Clip the igniter wire onto the contact next to the burner valve below the cooktop.

    • 9

Mix liquid soap and water in a spray bottle and shake it up.

    • 10

Open the gas valve lever below the cooktop to restore fuel flow then spray the soapy water onto the new valve connection. Bubbling and hissing are signs of a gas leak. Close the gas valve lever if this occurs. Unscrew the pipe connection from the valve and reapply pipe sealant then tighten down the nut and test again for leaks.
