How to Boost the Pressure in an In-Line Pump in a Shallow Well

The in-line pump for a residential shallow well water system has two adjustments for setting the pump pressure. One setting is known as the cut-in pressure, which is the pressure level at which the pump will activate. The cut-out pressure determines when the pump will shut off. Boosting the pressure, if necessary, ensures a reliable flow of water. However, the pump must not be adjusted higher than the manufacturer's ratings, or this may damage the unit. The simple adjustments take only a few minutes.

Instructions

Remove the screws that hold the box-like cover over the pump with a screwdriver. Take off the cover. Do not touch any of the wiring while you locate the two pump adjustment screws that extend vertically on the unit. One screw is larger than the other. Each is threaded through a metal spring.

    • 2

Turn the larger screw clockwise to increase the cut-in pressure. Use the scale marks on the side to guide your adjustments. Twist the screw counterclockwise to lower the cut-in pressure.

    • 3

Rotate the smaller screw clockwise to raise the pump's cut-out pressure. Twisting in the opposite direction reduces the cut-out pressure.

Replace the cover and secure it with the screws.
