How to Troubleshoot an Emperor Wall Clock With Chimes

Emperor wall clocks, also known as grandfather clocks, play chimes on the quarter hour. These charming clocks sometimes get out of sync, and the chimes play at the wrong time. You can troubleshoot the clock by moving the minute hand to see why the clock is out of sync and fix it.

Instructions

    • 1

Synchronize the chimes. Open the clock and turn the minute hand back 15 minutes and then forward 15 minutes. Listen for the chimes. If the clock plays the right amount of chimes for the time the minute hand points to, they are synchronized. Otherwise, keep moving the minute hand back and forth until this happens.

Examine the minute hand to make sure it's facing forward. If the minute hand is backwards, the clock won't consistently play the chimes correctly.

Remove the minute hand. Synchronize the chimes by re-installing the minute hand in the location that matches the number of chimes that are played. Remove the nut holding the minute hand in place with a wrench while holding the minute hand down with a pair of pliers so it doesn't fall off the clock. Move the minute hand to the correct location. Refasten the nut.
