How to Remove Insulation From Under Stovetop of a GE XL44 Gas Range

The GE XL44 gas range is named for its extra-large oven space, which on this model is 4.4 cubic feet. The range has a stovetop that raises over the range for cleaning and repairs, such as the replacement of an ignitor. As with other GE ranges, the XL44 is built with insulation material to contain heat. If the insulation scorches or begins to smell from food odors or grease dripping into the appliance from the stovetop, remove the old insulation to clean and prepare for installing new heat-resistant insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the controls on the range and wait for the appliance to cool.

    • 2

Remove the burner grates from the surface.

    • 3

Raise the stovetop by the front edge. If it is stuck, pry up the cooktop gently with a putty knife.

    • 4

Raise the support rod to the hole underneath the stovetop to hold the top in the elevated position. Some XL models have two support rods.

    • 5

Pull out the strips of insulation from the metal channels below the stovetop while wearing work gloves to protect your hands. The insulation can cut or scratch skin as well as cause itching.

    • 6

Place the old insulation material in a heavy-duty trash bag.
