How to Remove a Frigidaire Laundry Bearing

Electrolux manufactures an extensive line of residential, top-loading washing machines sold under the Frigidaire brand name. Frigidaire washers use a part known as a thrust bearing or thrust washer to secure the clutch components to a shaft that extends from the gear case on the motor assembly. Removing the thrust bearing is a lengthy process that requires the removal of the motor assembly. Unless you're particularly handy with tools, this repair is best left to a professional.

  • Old towels or blankets

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Frigidaire washer from the grounded electrical outlet. Close the valves that supply the hot and cold water to the appliance.

    • 2

Pull the washer 4 to 5 feet away from the wall. Squeeze the pinch clamp securing the drain hose to the back of the appliance. Slide the pinch clamp down the hose and detach the hose from its connector. Turn the screw clamps to disconnect the hot and cold water supply hoses. Catch any water that spills from the hoses, using a bucket or old towel.

    • 3

Open the washer lid. Lift the fabric softener dispenser off of the top of the agitator assembly, if applicable to your washer model. Slide the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the agitator cap. Wiggle the screwdriver back and forth to pry off the cap. Hold the agitator at its base and remove the agitator bolt and washer, using a 7/16-inch socket wrench. Remove the entire agitator assembly from the washer tub.

    • 4

Spread an old towel or blanket on the floor behind the washer to protect the rear panel from scuffs or scratches. Tilt the washer back and lay it on the towel or blanket. The washer is heavy; use two people to lay it on its back, if necessary.

    • 5

Access the motor assembly and pump components from the bottom of the appliance. Remove the metal clips securing the pump to the motor assembly; pull the clips from the pump with pliers or pry them off with the small flat-head screwdriver. Lift the pump off of the motor shaft and move it aside; it is not necessary to remove the two pump hoses.

    • 6

Unplug the motor wires from the wiring harness on the motor assembly. Pull firmly on the plastic connectors to detach the wires; pulling on the wires themselves will damage them. Locate the plastic retaining clip on the side of the motor assembly. Spread the retaining clip and remove the wires.

    • 7

Use a 1/2-inch socket wrench to remove the gear case bolts and separate the motor assembly from the base of the appliance. Pull the assembly from the washer cabinet.

    • 8

Place the removed motor assembly on an old towel. Slide the disc-like thrust bearing off of the long shaft extending from the gear case.
