How to Replace the Drum Seal on a Kenmore HE2 Plus Front Load Washer

The drum seal on a Kenmore HE2 Plus front load washing machine fits between the front of the drum and the door. When the washer is running, the drum seal prevents water from leaking out through the door. If the drum seal becomes damaged, the Kenmore washer will not function correctly, so it will need to be replaced with a new part.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power cord. Turn off the hot and cold water faucets connected to the washer.

    • 2

Remove the three screws along the back of the top cover. Slide the top cover toward the back and up to remove it.

    • 3

Unplug the electrical wires connected to the back of the control panel.

    • 4

Slide the detergent drawer out as far as it will go. Press the release tab at the back of the drawer. Remove the drawer from the cabinet.

    • 5

Remove the screw next to the detergent drawer. Pull the top of the control console down to unhook it from the cabinet. Set the console aside.

    • 6

Remove the three screws along the bottom of the lower front panel. Lift the panel off the washer cabinet.

    • 7

Open the washer door. Grasp the drum seal tension spring with the needle nosed pliers. Pull the tension spring off the front of the seal.

    • 8

Peel the drum seal away from the right side of the door opening. Remove the two screws next to the door switch assembly, then close the door.

    • 9

Remove the four screws holding the front panel in place. There are usually two on top and two on the bottom. Lift the front panel off the Kenmore washing machine.

    • 10

Loosen the screw holding the drum seal retaining clamp in place. Lift the clamp off the seal.

    • 11

Lift the drum seal off the front of the drum.

    • 12

Position the new drum seal onto the front of the drum with the weep holes at the bottom of the seal, with the three indentations pointing into the drum, to ensure it is properly aligned. Work the seal around the front of the drum by hand until it is firmly in place -- the lip of the seal should be in the grooved slot of the drum. Reverse the disassembly steps to put the Kenmore washer back together.
