How to Replace the Pump in a Kenmore Standalone Ice Maker

If the pump on your Kenmore freestanding ice maker gets rusted or corroded, the ice maker won't make and deliver ice. The pump moves water through the ice maker so it can be frozen into ice. If the water is too hard, the minerals can rust the pump and ruin the machine's operation. Fortunately, you can replace your pump yourself, although you can always call Sears if you are not comfortable doing so.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the ice maker or turn the power off at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Open the ice maker door to reveal the reservoir. Unscrew the drain cap. Drain the water from the reservoir and replace the drain cap, making sure to tighten.

    • 3

Unscrew the pump cover. A hexagonal screw holds on the cover; thus, you will need a screwdriver with a hexagonal head.

    • 4

Disconnect the electrical wires from the pump. Pay attention to where the wires connect. Make a diagram, if necessary.

    • 5

Unscrew the pump retaining bracket from the pump.

    • 6

Rotate the pump and pull it down and out of the reservoir.

    • 7

Put the new pump into the reservoir. Rotate it in the opposite direction that you rotated the old pump when removing.

    • 8

Follow the reverse of steps 1 through 6 to put the ice maker back together.
