How to Reset a Hot Surface Ignition on a Gas Furnace

Most residential gas furnaces manufactured in recent years use a hot surface ignition system to light the gas, rather than the pilot ignition systems commonly found in older furnaces. Electricity heats the hot surface ignitor and the gas ignites when passes over the hot component. If the gas flows for seven to 10 seconds without igniting, the ignition system forces the furnace and ignitor into lockout mode. Perform a simple furnace reset to unlock the hot surface ignition system. Gas furnaces can be reset from the furnace power switch, solid state controller box or circuit breaker.

Instructions

  1. Power Switch or Solid State Controller Reset

    • 1

Locate the power switch or solid state controller box on the side of the gas furnace. Look for switch that's similar to a light switch or a small square box with a raised red button.

    • 2

Flip the furnace power switch to the "Off" position or press and hold the raised red reset button on the solid state controller box.

    • 3

Release the reset button after five seconds. Wait three to five minutes, then switch the furnace power switch back to the "On" position.

    Circuit Breaker Reset

    • 4

Open your home's main circuit breaker box. Find the circuit breaker that supplies the electricity to the gas furnace.

    • 5

Move the circuit breaker into the "Off" position.

    • 6

Leave the circuit breaker in the "Off" position for five minutes. Move the circuit breaker back to the "On" position to reset the furnace and hot surface ignition system.
