How to Replace a GE Ice Maker Control Valve

The control valve in a GE refrigerator regulates water flow to the ice maker. When the ice falls below a preset level in the storage bin, the sensor sends an electrical signal to the control valve, which opens to let water flow in from the external supply line. If the control valve malfunctions, water cannot reach the ice maker. Replacing the valve assembly takes less than an hour. Buy a replace control valve from an appliance repair store or order one from GE.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the GE refrigerator power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Shut off the valve in the supply line connected to the refrigerator. The valve knob may be under the sink or built into the line near the back of the appliance. Turn the valve knob clockwise to close.

    • 3

Slide the refrigerator from the wall with a friend's help, if necessary.

    • 4

Remove the screws in the small cover plate near the bottom of the refrigerator. The water line enters through this plate.

    • 5

Take off the plate and slide it along the line, out of your way.

    • 6

Twist the nut holding the line to the control valve counterclockwise using an adjustable wrench. A small amount of water may spill from the line.

    • 7

Pull off the two wires by the leads connected to the top of the control valve.

    • 8

Remove the screw in the metal bar that holds the control valve to the side of the refrigerator. You can now remove the old part.

    • 9

Attach the new control valve to the metal bar and secure it with the screw in the same orientation as the old part.

    • 10

Slip the leads on the two wires onto the terminals on top of the control valve.

    • 11

Wrap the threaded inlet on the valve with plumber's tape.

    • 12

Connect the supply line to the inlet on the new valve and tighten with the wrench.

    • 13

Fasten the cover plate back on the refrigerator using the screws removed in Step 4.

    • 14

Unscrew the knob in the supply line to let water flow to the refrigerator.

    • 15

Reconnect the power cord and push the refrigerator back to its original position with a friend's assistance.
