How to Install Glow Plugs in a Whirlpool Dryer

Whirlpool gas dryers use an igniter system called a glow plug that heats red-hot to ignite gas from the valve inside the appliance. The valve opens when a sensor detects the glow plug is hot enough to light the gas. If the glow plug burns out, which is common with gas dryers, the appliance will not heat until the part is replaced. Installing a new glow plug takes less than an hour using basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Whirlpool's power cord, which provides electricity to heat the glow plug. Close the gas valve on the hose connected to the back of the dryer, turning the knob on the valve clockwise.

Pry off the left and right edges of the Whirlpool's bottom front panel using a flat-blade screwdriver. Pop off the panel and set aside.

    • 5

Pull the electrical plug wired to the back of the glow plug from the socket in the burner assembly.

    • 6

Loosen the bracket screw holding the glow plug on the burner. Lift out the old part.

    • 7

Place the new glow plug in the bracket and tighten the screw. Connect the wired plug on the end to the socket on the burner assembly.

    • 8

Attach the burner assembly to the mounting plate inside the Whirlpool with the two screws.

    • 9

Reconnect the burner assembly to the gas valve with the screw removed in Step 3.
