How to Replace the Ignition on a Jenn Air Cooktop

Jenn Air gas cooktops work with an electronic igniter installed below the surface to light the individual burners. The igniter connects to an electrical plug below the cooktop that provides power. If the igniter wears out or malfunctions, it must be replaced before the cooktop will operate properly. This relatively simple repair takes less than an hour. to do Buy a replacement igniter from Jenn Air or an appliance parts retailer. Work gloves help protect your hands from the sharp metal edges underneath the Jenn Air cooktop.

Instructions

    • 1

      Shut off the gas to the cooktop by turning the valve handle clockwise behind the appliance. Unplug the electrical cord that supplies power to the appliance.

      Remove the screws on the underside of the Jenn Air along the front edge. If you are working on a range, open the oven door to access the screws that hold the cooktop in place.

      Remove the burner grates from the cooktop surface.

      Put on work gloves then lift the front edge of the cooktop by the left and right corners. Raise the support rod underneath to hold up the cooktop at an angle. The igniter is near the front edge and is a thin tube mounted on a steel clip. A wiring harness runs from the back of the igniter to the power socket underneath the appliance.

      Pull the wired plug on the end of the igniter from the power socket.

      Loosen the screw in the clip that holds the cylindrical igniter in place. Remove the igniter assembly.

      Place the new igniter in position on the clip and tighten the screw in the clip to secure the part. Do not touch the metallic igniter tip, which is extremely fragile.

      Connect the wired plug on the back of the igniter to the power socket.

      Lower the cooktop back to its original position and secure the underside with the screws removed in Step 2.

      Plug in the Jenn Air's electrical cord.

      Turn the handle in the gas line counterclockwise to open the gas valve.
