How to Remove a Spin Tub in a Maytag Performa LAT2300AAE

When repairing your Maytag Performa washing machine, it is sometimes necessary to remove the inner spin tub from the washer to access the direct drive motor, brake and clutch on the machine. Dropping a heavy object into the inner spin tub can chip the porcelain finish, and the water in the wash tub will eventually cause the area to rust. The damage to the tub can also damage your clothes if they get snagged on the rusted area. If the rusted area is left untreated, you must remove and replace the spin tub.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-inch putty knife
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 7/16-inch socket
  • Socket extender

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Maytag Performa top-loading washing machine from the wall.

    • 2

Slide a 2-inch putty knife into the seam under the front right corner of the washer. Lift up on the knife handle to pop the top of the Performa washer off the front clip. Repeat for the front left corner of the machine.

    • 3

Open the top of the machine to expose the screws holding the front panel on the cabinet. Let the top rest against the wall behind the Performa washer.

    • 4

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the front panel to the Performa cabinet. These screws are located about 2 inches below the front lip on both sides of the cabinet.

    • 5

Tilt the front panel toward you, and lift it up from the clips along the bottom frame of the washer. Set the front panel aside.

    • 6

Pop up the eight clips from the plastic tub cover that attach it to the exterior washtub. You may need to push down on the lip of the tub cover to release the clips from the washtub. Lift the tub cover off the exterior tub and interior spin tub, and set the cover aside.

Snap the agitator cap off the top center of the agitator. Attach a 7/16-inch socket to an extender and socket wrench. Insert the socket into the agitator, and remove the agitator bolt. Lift the agitator from the washtub to expose the four bolts holding the spin tub in the Performa washer.

    • 8

Remove the four bolts from the floor of the spin tub. Lift the spin tub from the Maytag Performa washer.
