How to Replace Spark Kits in a Maytag Cooktop

Issues that can stop your Maytag gas-cooktop burners from igniting include clogged holes on the burners, broken ignition switches beneath the control knobs and a failed spark module. Any one of these issues can cause an irritating, nonstop clicking noise to emit from the cooktop when you turn on the stove. After checking the holes in your gas burners and your ignition switches, and discovering they are still in working order, replace the spark module with one from a Maytag spark kit.

Things You'll Need

  • Strap wrench
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Phillips or slotted screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Reach behind your Maytag cooktop to unplug the unit from the wall and turn off the gas supply at the valve.

    • 2

Lift the burner grates off the cooktop and set them aside. Slip a strap wrench around the burner, positioning the handle at the igniter on the side of the burner to avoid crushing it.

    • 3

Turn the strap wrench clockwise about 1 1/2 inches to disconnect the burner from cooktop. Lift the burner out of the cooktop. Repeat with each burner on the cooktop.

    • 4

Mark the location of the wires on the bottom of the burner so you know where the wires attach when you reassemble the Maytag cooktop. Grab the wires at the wire connectors with needle-nose pliers and gently pull the connectors from the burner.

    • 5

Remove the screws and washers from the cooktop at each burner location. These hold the cooktop to the rest of the stove.

    • 6

Measure a distance of 4 1/2 inches from the right front corner toward the front center of the cooktop to locate the clip holding the cooktop to the rest of the stove. Slide a putty knife into the seam along the front of the Maytag cooktop at the clip location.

    • 7

Pull up on the putty knife to pop the cooktop off the clip. Repeat this action at the left front corner of the cooktop. Lift up on the cooktop and allow it to rest against the wall behind the stove.

    • 8

Pull the unit from the wall to access the rear of the stove. Remove the screws from the back of the stove’s left side to release the right panel from the stove. Remove the additional screws from the top of the stove’s right side to remove the panel from the stove.

    • 9

Look for the cooktop spark module in the right bottom corner of the open side of the stove. Grab the wires on the spark module with needle-nose pliers and carefully pull the wire connectors attached to the wires from the module. As you remove a wire from the original module, install it in the same location on the replacement spark module.

    • 10

Remove the screws holding the original spark module to the stove. Remove the module and discard.

    • 11

Attach the replacement module to the stove with the screws you removed from the original module.

    • 12

Reassemble the stove and cooktop by reversing the disassembly steps. Slide it back into place. Connect the electricity to the Maytag stove and turn on the gas.
