How to Replace a Fan Blade on a Furnace Blower

Furnaces are the most popular type of residential heating equipment in the United States, according to Energy Star. The appliances use an internal blower assembly with a fan blade or wheel to circulate the warm air that they produce. If the fan blade or wheel is damaged, the furnace may not run as efficiently. You can replace the damaged component to have your furnace working again in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the circuit breaker that supplies the electricity to the furnace. If your furnace has a dedicated "On/Off" switch, flip it to the "Off" position. Close the gas supply valve if you have a gas furnace.

    • 2

Remove the blower compartment access door; this is the top access panel on downflow furnace models and the bottom access panel on upflow models. Grab the sides of the panel and lift straight up to disengage the retaining clips on the furnace cabinet. Remove screws to free the panel, if applicable to your model.

    • 3

Locate the screws or bolts securing the blower assembly to the furnace cabinet. Remove the screws or bolts, using a suitable screwdriver or adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Detach the wiring from the blower assembly motor. Note the location of the wiring for reassembly.

    • 5

Pull the blower assembly out of the furnace cabinet and place it on an old towel with the fan side facing up. Remove the set screw from the hub at the center of the fan blade or blower wheel, using a hex-head screwdriver.

    • 6

Lift out the old fan blade or blower wheel. Thread the replacement blade or wheel onto the blower motor shaft and replace the removed set screw.
