How to Install a Spark Igniter on a Gas Oven

Gas ovens use one of two types of igniters to create a flame to heat the appliance. The first type is a glow bar that heats until the gas ignites. The more modern style is a spark igniter, which creates an electrical spark that ignites the gas. When a spark igniter stops functioning and needs replacing, it’s a relatively easy installation for most owners.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the gas range from the electrical source or turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Open the over door and slide the racks out of the oven.

    • 2

Flip the hinge locks located on each side of the oven door down, using a prying tool. Lift the door up and pull it away from the gas range. Remove the oven’s bottom panel by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place. Remove the screws and lift out the burner shield, too.

    • 3

Remove the mounting screws that hold the igniter in place. Disconnect the wire to the igniter by accessing the bottom panel or the storage drawer of the gas range, depending on the unit. Remove the igniter.

    • 4

Connect the wire of the new igniter and screw it into place. Replace the burner shield and bottom panel of the oven, screwing each back into place. Replace the oven door and lock the hinge locks back into place. Replace the oven racks and close the door. Reconnect the power source to the oven range.
