How to Replace the Igniter on a Whirlpool Cooker

Whirlpool oven igniters are made of high temperature resistant material that glows cherry red when an electrical charge passes through the device. When the igniter activates, a valve opens, allowing gas to flow over the device and ignite. When the oven reaches cooking temperature, the thermostat shuts the flame down, and then re-activates the igniter when the temperature drops. Although oven igniters are made to last for years, continuous on/off cycles and extreme conditions eventually cause them to fail. Fortunately, when this happens, you can replace the igniter yourself without calling for a gas certified technician.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the stove’s power cord from the wall outlet and turn the gas supply valve at the back of the stove to the “off” position.

    • 2

Open the oven door to the first semi-open position, lift the door off its hinges, and set it aside. Pivot the door hinges back against the face of the oven opening and remove the oven racks.

    • 3

Locate the two catches on the rear corners of the oven bottom panel, slide the catches forward, and lift the bottom panel out.

    • 4

Remove the single screw securing the front of the burner assembly to the oven with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the front of the burner assembly to the right, lift it up to disengage the burner inlet gas tube from the oven gas valve bayonet connector, and tilt the burner assembly onto its left side.

    • 5

Remove the fireproof wadding surrounding the wires and pull the two wires out of the hole on the lower right of the oven to withdraw the wiring harness connector. Press the two side tabs on the wire connector inward and unplug the burner assembly from the wiring harness. Lift the burner assembly out of the oven.

    • 6

Remove the two hex head screws securing the igniter assembly to the bracket on the right rear corner of the burner assembly with a 5/16 nut driver, and lift the faulty igniter off. Position a new igniter assembly over the bracket, replace the hex head screws and tighten them securely.

    • 7

Compare the wire connector on the new burner assembly to the old one. If it’s different, follow the instructions on the package and replace the incorrect plug with the alternative plug supplied in the burner assembly kit.

    • 8

Turn the burner assembly over and clean out any soot and carbon deposits from the perforations on both sides of the burner tube with an old toothbrush. Wipe the gas inlet tube clean with a rag and place the burner assembly on its left side inside the oven.

    • 9

Plug the igniter wire connector back into the socket on the wiring harness. Straighten the burner assembly, and feed the connector and wires back through the hole on the rear oven wall. Wrap the new fireproof wadding supplied in the burner kit around the wires close to the igniter assembly and push the wadding and wires into the hole to plug it.

    • 10

Pivot the front of the burner assembly slightly toward the right and lower the burner inlet tube into the recess in the gas valve. Slide the front of the burner assembly to the left to straighten it, and to lock the inlet tube bayonet connector in place. Secure the front of the burner assembly to the oven with the single screw removed earlier.

    • 11

Replace the oven bottom panel, slide the two rear corner catches into their slots on the back of the oven wall, and push the catches toward the back to lock them in place.

    • 12

Reinstall the oven racks. Pivot the door hinges forward, lower the oven door onto the hinge bars, and close the door. Plug the stove power cord back into the outlet and turn the cooker gas valve back on.
