How to Replace an Auger Yoke on an Ice Maker on a Maytag Side by Side

Whirlpool Corp. manufactures refrigerators, washers, dryers and other residential appliances under the Maytag brand name and many others. Maytag boasts an extensive line of premium side-by-side refrigerators, many of which include built-in, automatic ice makers. The ice maker's "yoke" is an internal component that engages the drive ring and rotates the auger. A failed auger yoke in your Maytag ice maker is no threat to the avid DIYer's ice supply. Install a replacement to get the appliance back in working condition.

      Lift the shutoff arm to turn off the ice maker while you replace the auger yoke. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall socket before disassembling the ice maker, to avoid electrocution.

      Remove the mounting screws on the front of the ice maker bin; the type and number of screws varies by model. Use needle-nose pliers to unhook the spring from the control rod and control rod bracket. Remove the bin assembly from the freezer and set it aside.

      Find the "C" snap clip on the auger assembly. Turn the clip so that it's open at the top and pry it off of the assembly, using the needle-nose pliers. Remove the retaining washer. Press the auger assembly with your thumb to separate it from the crusher housing. Rotate the auger nut clockwise, using an adjustable wrench, to remove it.

      Remove the retaining screw from the bottom left side of the bin shelf enclosure. Slide the shelf toward you and detach the wiring connector from the back of the component.

      Pull the auger assembly out of the freezer and set it on a padded surface. Hold the assembly in place and turn the auger yoke knob clockwise to release it from the motor shaft. Remove the yoke from the assembly.

      Insert the replacement yoke into the auger assembly. Turn the yoke knob counterclockwise to lock it into place.
