My Whirlpool Portable Washer Has a Water Pump Leak

Whirlpool portable washers use a hose adapter to connect to a kitchen sink or other faucet for washing clothes where traditional hookups are unavailable. The washer operates with a pump inside the appliance near the front at the bottom, to expel water before the start of the spin cycle. If the pump itself leaks, an internal seal may have failed. Replace it with a new pump available at appliance repair shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop the Whirlpool washer by pushing in the cycle control knob. Unplug the power cord from the wall.

    • 2

Turn off the faucet supplying water to the washer.

    • 3

Snap off the trim panels on the left and right front edges of the control panel to expose the screws underneath.

    • 4

Take out the screws in the sides and back of the control panel to tip the panel backward.

    • 5

Use a screwdriver to pop out the curved clip on the left and right sides at the top of the Whirlpool washer. The clips hold the cabinet to the underside of the control panel.

    • 6

Tip the cabinet forward and lift to remove it from the internal mechanism. Set aside the cabinet. The water pump is near the bottom of the appliance, connected with two hoses.

    • 7

Press a towel against the pump and hoses to check for moisture. If the valve is cracked or seeping water around the seams, the part should be replaced. There is no repair for a washer pump, only replacement.

    • 8

Squeeze the metal band around each hose on the pump to pull off the hoses, using pliers. A small amount of leaking water from the hose is normal. Check the rubber ends of each hose for signs of rotting or cracking.

    • 9

Pop off the metal clip at the top and bottom of the pump. Take out the screws underneath each clip.

    • 10

Pull the pump straight off the steel spindle that rotates to drive the pump mechanism.

    • 11

Align the new pump in the same orientation as the old part and push it onto the spindle. Secure the pump with the screws and snap on the two metal bands, one at the top and the other at the bottom.

    • 12

Squeeze the clamp on the end of each hose to slide the hoses onto the two pump pipes.

    • 13

Set the cabinet in position on the front edge of the appliance frame at the bottom and tilt back into place.

    • 14

Press the retainer clips attached to the underside of the control panel into their slots on the top of the Whirlpool washer.

    • 15

Raise the control panel and reattach it to the cabinet with the screws removed in Step 4.

    • 16

Snap the left and right trim panels onto the sides of the control panel.

    • 17

Plug in the power cord to wash clothes.
