How to Troubleshoot the Switch on a Lennox Gas Fireplace

Lennox gas fireplace models are equipped with a cutoff switch that can be wall mounted to close the gas valve and shut down the appliance. The switch is part of the heater control that adjusts the flames on the burners in the fireplace. If the switch is defective, the Lennox may not ignite. A simple resistance test using an ohmmeter lets you determine in seconds whether the switch is defective and needs replacement. New parts are available from Lennox or a gas appliance supply store.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the valve in the gas line connected to the Lennox. Turn the handle on the valve one-quarter turn clockwise to stop gas flow.

    • 2

Turn off the circuit breaker to the room wired with the Lennox fireplace and wall switch.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the switch faceplate to the wall. Pull off the faceplate and remove the screws holding the switch in the mounting bracket underneath.

    • 4

Pull the switch forward to loosen the screws in the sides and take out the two wires connected to the screws.

    • 5

Set the ohmmeter to the low resistance mark, typically labeled "Rx1" on the device. Hold the two test probes on the ohmmeter against the two screw terminals on the switch.

    • 6

Dial the switch to the "On" position. If the ohmmeter continues to register zero, the switch is defective and must be replaced.
