What Are the Functions of the Bag Check Indicator of a Hoover WindTunnel Mach 6.1?

The Hoover Company produces a line of canister and upright vacuums called the WindTunnel series. The Mach 6.1 WindTunnel vacuum is an upright version featuring a check bag indicator light that tells you when to change the bag for optimal vacuuming power. The check bag indicator light activates for several different reasons.
  1. Check Bag Indicator Light

    • Hoover WindTunnel vacuums feature a check bag indicator light to warn the operator that the bag needs attention. The indicator light, located on the front of the WindTunnel machines, turns red when it senses that the filter bag is full or that the machine is no longer operating at full capacity. Three conditions will cause the light to activate.

    Full Bag

    • The most common reason the check bag indicator light comes on is that the bag is indeed full and needs to be replaced. Hoover recommends that you change the filter bag before the debris reaches the bottom of the bag collar, the cardboard piece that slips over the intake opening. If the bag fills beyond this point, the vacuum looses power and debris may back up into the intake hose.

    Blockage

    • The check bag indicator light will also activate if airflow through the vacuum is obstructed. First check the bag itself, to make sure the opening is clear. Then check the nozzle, hoses and tools for blockages such as paper or wads of pet hair. Blockages are most likely to occur at bends in the hose path. Once the blockage is removed, the check bag indicator light should go out and the vacuum should work normally.

    Clogged Pores

    • Vacuuming up very fine particles, such as powder or fine kitty litter, clogs the pores on the surface of the vacuum bag. These pores allow air to escape from the bag, leaving the debris behind inside the bag. If the pores clog, the vacuum cannot vent air back out of the bag and the machine loses power. In extreme cases, the bag will burst, which rarely harms the machine but does create a mess. If the check bag light comes on when the bag is not full and there's no blockage in the hose system, then the pores are clogged and the bag needs to be replaced. Check the filters also and replace or clean them, if necessary.
