Twist the handle on the gas valve 90 degrees to the left to shut off gas to the oven. The valve is typically located below the oven inside a cabinet. Shut off electricity at the circuit breaker.
Take off the screws on the sides of the bottom front plate on the Maytag. Pull down and forward to remove the plate. Looking inside, you'll see the gas valve near the center. The thermocouple to the right of the gas valve is a circular part with a wire across the top and a metal bulb in the center.
Pull off the two wires on the thermocouple contacts and attach the two lead clips on the ohmmeter to the contacts. If the ohmmeter displays an infinite reading, which will appear as scrolling numbers on a digital meter, the thermocouple is defective. The only fix for this problem is to replace the part.
Use a screwdriver to loosen the two screws holding the mounting clips on the thermo coupling to the inside of the oven. Slide out the defective part.
Put the new thermocouple in the same position and slide the clips under the screw heads. Tighten the screws.
Connect the two wires to the contacts on the new thermocouple.
Put the front bottom plate on the oven and secure it on the left and right with screws.
Restore electrical power and open the gas valve below the oven.
