How to Replace the Whirlpool Clutch Assembly

Whirlpool residential direct-drive washers use a clutch assembly to help the tub reach the appropriate spin speed at the end of the washing cycle. When the clutch starts to wear out, the tub may spin slowly or not at all. Replacing the clutch assembly in a Whirlpool washer is a lengthy and difficult process that is not for the casual do-it-yourselfer. Call a professional appliance repair technician if you're uncomfortable or unfamiliar with this type of repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer from the grounded wall outlet. Close the hot and cold water supply valves.

    • 2

Pull the washer away from the wall. Unscrew and remove the two water supply hoses from the rear panel. Pinch the clamp that secures the drain hose to the back of the appliance. Slide the clamp down the hose to get it out of the way, and disconnect the drain hose. Use a towel to catch any water that spills from the drain hose and water supply hoses.

    • 3

Open the washer lid and use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry off the agitator cap. Hold the base of the agitator and use a 7/16-inch socket wrench to remove the agitator bolt and its washer. Lift the entire agitator assembly out of the washer tub.

    • 4

Place a towel on the floor directly behind the washer. Tip the washer all the way back to rest on the floor so you can access the components on the underside of the appliance. The washer is heavy; work carefully to avoid injury.

    • 5

Pry off the metal clips holding the pump to the motor assembly, using the flat-head screwdriver. Pull the pump straight up to remove it from the motor shaft. Move the pump to the side; it is not necessary to disconnect the hoses attached to the pump.

    • 6

Pull firmly on the plastic wiring harness to disconnect it from the motor assembly. Remove the wires from the plastic retaining clip. Pinch the clip to release it or use the flat-head screwdriver to pry it open.

    • 7

Remove the bolts securing the gear case to the washer base, using a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Pull the entire gear case and motor assembly out of the bottom of the washer cabinet. Place the assembly on a towel or other padded surface.

    • 8

Slide the thrust washer off of the shaft on the gear case. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull the support ring from the shaft. Pry the retainer ring from the shaft, using the flat-head screwdriver. Remove the clutch assembly from the shaft.

    • 9

Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the "C" ring from the drive tube. Remove the brake cam component. Fit the new brake cam from the clutch replacement kit onto the drive tube. Replace the "C" ring.

    • 10

Slide the new clutch onto the gear case shaft. Reinstall the retainer and support rings. Replace the thrust washer.
