How to Repair the Humidity Sensor in a Kenmore Dryer

The humidity or moisture sensor bar in the Kenmore dryer senses the amount of moisture in your clothes during the drying cycle. Most new dryers have an automatic setting that keeps the dryer running as long as your clothes remain wet. Once the sensor no longer senses wet clothes inside the dryer, it sends a signal to the dryer control console to turn the dryer off. A faulty humidity sensor can dry your clothes too much and possibly damage them or it could stop the dryer prematurely. Repair the humidity sensor by replacing the sensor bar.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Kenmore dryer from the electric wall outlet.

    • 2

Slide a 2-inch putty knife into the space between the control console and the top of the dryer cabinet. Lift up on the knife handle to release the console from the dryer cabinet.

    • 3

Rotate the Kenmore control console up and over the back of the dryer. This exposes the two hex head screws that connect the top of the cabinet to the bottom dryer cabinet.

    • 4

Remove the hex head screws from the cabinet top with a nut driver. Lift up on the front of the cabinet top. Pull forward on the top to remove it from the bottom cabinet.

    • 5

Insert a large slotted screwdriver into the opening between the dryer door panel and the lower kick panel on the front of the Kenmore dryer cabinet. Twist the slotted screwdriver to the right or left to release the kick panel from the door panel. Lift the kick panel off the dryer frame to open the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 6

Find the two large springs to the right and left of the opening in the bottom of the cabinet. Unhook these springs from the door panel and the base of the dryer cabinet.

    • 7

Remove the two Phillips screws from the bottom lip on the Kenmore dryer door panel holding it to the cabinet. Find the two screws holding the silver colored door panel lint duct to the exhaust duct beneath the door panel.

    • 8

Disconnect the humidity sensor wire from the top right side of the lint duct beneath the dryer door panel. Disconnect the door switch wire harness located at the top of the dryer door panel.

    • 9

Take out the two screws from the top of the dryer door panel to release the door panel from the dryer cabinet. Lift the door panel off the dryer.

    • 10

Open the door of the Kenmore dryer and pull out the lint screen. Lay the dryer door panel face down on a blanket or towel to avoid scratching the front of the dryer.

    • 11

Find the mounting screws on the screen grill beneath the door opening to the right, left and bottom of the grill. Remove these three screws and lift the grill off the door panel. Look for a green wire that connects to the back of the grill with a spade terminal. Grab the terminal and wiggle the green wire off the connector.

    • 12

Look for the end of the thin metal humidity sensor bar on the back of the grill. The humidity sensor bar threads through the back of the grill and snaps into a groove along the top front of the grill. Use needle nose pliers to squeeze the two tabs that hold the sensor bar in the grill.

    • 13

Pull the original sensor from the grill. Install a replacement sensor in its place.

    • 14

Push the spade terminal connected to the green wire back onto the connector on the back of the grill. Replace the grill on the back of the dryer door panel, securing it with the screws you took from the grill previously.

    • 15

Reassemble your Kenmore dryer by reversing the disassembly steps.
