How to Change a Kitchen Vent

Many modern kitchens come equipped with hood vents over the oven ranges. These hood vents have fans that clear the kitchen or cooking area of smoke, and they have lightbulbs in them to provide illumination while cooking. Like any electrical component, it is possible for a kitchen hood vent to become damaged. Even if the one in your kitchen is in fine working order, you may want to upgrade to a newer model. You may be surprised to learn you can remove and replace a kitchen vent on your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power to the vent by flipping its breaker switch on your home panel to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Slide the filters out of their compartments on the underside of the vent.

    • 3

Remove the screws on the access panel situated on the underside of the vent. Remove the panel to gain access to the internal components, such as the motor.

    • 4

Unplug the wiring inside the vent from the ports they are attached to. Take note of which ports these wires attach to.

    • 5

Fit lengths of wood underneath the four corners of the vent so they prop the vent up. This will prevent the vent from falling when you remove the mounting screws.

    • 6

Locate the mounting screws on the inside top of the vent and remove them with your screwdriver.

    • 7

Hold the base of the vent with one hand and remove the blocks propping the vent up. Carefully lower the vent to remove it.

    • 8

Fit a new model vent over the range and prop it up with the blocks. You'll want to make sure it is a similar model to the old vent so it will fit in the space over the range.

    • 9

Replace the mounting screws inside the top of the new vent. Remove the lengths of wood.

    • 10

Plug the wiring into their appropriate ports.

    • 11

Replace the access panel and filters.
